Schedule Description of land in Southland Land District Southland District cl 3(1) 139960.3937 hectares being sections 1 to 52, SO Plan 304210. Marie Shroff, Clerk of the Executive Council. Explanatory note This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect. This order establishes the Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura. It includes the bulk of the land held for reserve or conservation purposes on the island. The establishment of the park follows the usual processes under the National Parks Act 1980, including public consultation and a recommendation from the New Zealand Conservation Authority. Stewart Island/Rakiura is a largely unspoilt area of natural and scenic beauty that is increasingly valued as a refuge for threatened species and examples of unmodified ecosystems. Vegetation ranges from coastal forest to alpine grassland. The landscape is rugged and unique, creating a particular wilderness character that justifies national park status. Issued under the authority of the Acts and Regulations Publication Act 1989. Date of notification in Gazette: 31 January 2002.
