Maritime Zones (Economic Activities) Regulations 2014 GN No. 88 of 2014 Government Gazette of Mauritius No. 48 of 24 May 2014 THE MARITIME ZONES ACT Regulations made by the Prime Minister under sections 21A, 21B and 27 of the Maritime Zones Act 1. These regulations maybe cited as the Maritime Zones (Economic Activities) Regulations 2014; 2. In these regulations — “Act” means the Maritime Zones Act; “deep sea water” means water which is located within the water column at depths of 400 metres or greater from the surface of the ocean and displaying the following properties — (a) water temperatures that range between 4 and 12 degrees celsius; (b) the absence of pathogenic bacteria; and (c) the presence of minerals and trace minerals, including but not limited to, phosphate, nitrate and silicate. 3. For the purposes of Part VIIA of the Act, economic activities, in relation to the land-based oceanic industry, shall be those specified in the second column of the Schedule. 4. These regulations shall come into operation on 26 May 2014. Made by the Prime Minister on 22 May 2014. SCHEDULE [Regulation 3] ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES 1. Research or production activities using deep sea Any activity for — (a) research or production of chemicals water by using the contents or properties of deep sea water; (b)research or production of chemicals by using specific chemicals, compounds or minerals of deep sea water; (c)research, production or enhancement of agricultural goods by using the contents or properties of deep sea water; or (d)food processing activities by using the contents or properties of deep sea water 2. Deep sea water air conditioning An activity for the provision of cooling or air conditioning services by using thermal and other properties of deep sea water 3. Deep sea water extraction An activity for the extraction of deep sea water 4. Deep sea water sale An activity for the sale of deep sea water. 5. Deep sea water energy conservation and production technologies An activity that uses proven innovative technologies and contributes to energy conservation and production by using thermal and other properties of deep sea water. 6. High-end aquaculture An activity for the breeding, rearing or harvesting of marine living organisms supported, fully or partly, by deep sea water or of contents derived from deep sea water 7. Leisure, entertainment, tourism or wellness Any leisure, entertainment, tourism or wellness activity which uses or depends on deep sea water 8. Production of deep sea water ice An activity for the production of frozen deep sea water to be used for the preservation of freshly harvested fish and seafood 9. Production of high-purity marine salt An activity for the production of high purity marine salt which includes edible salt and sodium chloride by using the contents or properties of deep sea water 10. Production of preservative An activity for the production of preservative by using the contents or properties of deep sea water 11 . Research or production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics Any activity for the research or production of pharmaceuticals or cosmetics by using — (a) contents or properties of deep sea water; or (b) specific chemicals, compounds or minerals of deep sea water 12. Production of premium mineral water or beverage An activity for the production of premium mineral water or beverage by using the water contents exclusively processed from deep sea water
