Ask the research

Ask in your own words. The answer is the research itself: its records, word for word, with every source and how sure each one is.

No agreement changes gold treatment on this leg: Australia's duty on gold is free for all, and PNG's BPNG export consent applies to every destination. Australia is the main outlet for PNG gold: the PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy described the Perth Mint as the regional refining hub (May 2024), and PNG was Australia's largest gold import source in 2024 (US$2.49bn, about 38 t). PNG's own reported exports to Australia are a fraction of Australia's recorded imports.

Where practice departs from the law

What credible sources show happening that the law does not provide for.

      • Australia recorded about seven times as much gold imported from PNG in 2022 as PNG reported exporting to Australia (value). PNG's reporting appears incomplete (possibly covering only part of the mining or alluvial exports, or gold in concentrates classed elsewhere). The PNG module separately records officials' concern about unaccounted alluvial exports (pg.div-unaccounted-exports).

        Figures: AU US$1,601.9m / 28,342 kg vs PG US$221.3m / 3,942 kg (2022)
