Ask the research
No trade agreement between Brazil and Canada is in force, and Canada's duty on gold is nil for all origins, so the pair gets ordinary treatment. Canada is Brazil's largest gold destination (2024: about 29 t, US$1.8bn). A Greenpeace Brazil investigation (June 2026) links part of this flow to gold laundered through garimpo permits (PLGs). No Canadian pair-specific control was found.

Where practice departs from the law
What credible sources show happening that the law does not provide for.
Canada's recorded imports from Brazil were about 6% higher by value but 11% lower by weight than Brazil's recorded exports (2024).
Figures: CA US$1,914.1m / 25,874 kg vs BR US$1,804.5m / 28,950 kg
Official guidanceResearcher's note: Researcher's arithmetic.
Greenpeace Brazil (June 2026) analysed 187 tenements and found 98 PLGs with irregularities accounting for 25.3 t of declared gold sales; it describes 'ghost' garimpos used as paper trails and industrial-scale operations split into small permits, and names Canada as the top destination of Brazilian gold.
Figures: 98 irregular PLGs; 25.3 t declared sales
