The UAE bought almost all of Sudan's legal gold exports (about 90% in H1 2025) until an unannounced UAE embargo in August 2025 halted flights from Port Sudan and closed UAE ports to Sudan shipping. The US (Jan 2025) and the UK (Jul 2026) have designated UAE-based companies that trade Sudanese gold. Since 15 July 2026 the EU bans buying Sudan-origin gold routed via third countries such as the UAE. Sudan files no gold data with UN Comtrade.

Where practice departs from the law
What credible sources show happening that the law does not provide for.
Sudan reported no HS 710812 exports to UN Comtrade for 2022 or 2023, so no mirror comparison is possible from Sudan's side.
SecondaryAfter the embargo, most output moved to informal channels. By November 2025 the head of Sudan's mineral authority put smuggling at 80% of gold exports. Smuggled gold is reported going to Egypt, Qatar and Oman, and then re-exported to the UAE.
