Fisheries Resources No. 158] Fisheries Resources 1 Citation. Interpretation. BELIZE: STATUTORY INSTRUMENT No. 158 of 2020 REGULATIONS made by the Minister responsible for Fisheries in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 87 of the Fisheries Resources Act, Act No. 7 of 2020, and all other powers thereunto him enabling. (Gazetted 5th November, 2020) PART I Preliminary 1. These Regulations may be cited as the FISHERIES RESOURCES (GILL NET PROHIBITION) REGULATIONS, 2020. 2. In these Regulations– “fisheries waters” means the waters of the exclusive economic zone, territorial sea and internal waters as defined in section 2 of the Maritime Areas Act; and “gill net” means a wall or curtain of rectangular netting constructed from mono- or multi-filament nylon or natural or synthetic fibres typically arranged in a diamond or square mesh, which may or may not be suspended vertically in the water column between floats attached to the top edge and weights attached to the bottom edge, or attached to poles. OMAR FIGUEROA Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development (Minister responsible for Fisheries) 3.– (1) No person shall use a gill net of any mesh size or length for the purpose of, or as a method of, catching fish in fisheries waters. (2) No person shall land, sell, buy or be in possession of any fish obtained in fisheries waters by the use of a gill net. (3) No person shall have in his possession a gillnet in fisheries waters. (4) A person who contravenes this regulation commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to– (a) a fine of five thousand dollars; (b) imprisonment for six months; or (c) both such fine and term of imprisonment. 4. The Fisheries Regulations is amended by repealing regulation 15:01. MADE by the Minister responsible for Fisheries this 4th day of November, 2020. Prohibition on gill net. Consequential amendment.
